KID ROCK Sued For Copyright Infringement
April 20, 2002A lawsuit has been filed against KID ROCK by Microhits Music Corp. accusing the singer of copyright infringement over his song "Cowboy". According to the suit, which was filed in United States District Court, Central District of California on Wednesday, April 17th, "Cowboy" – which appeared on ROCK's multi-platinum 1998 album Devil Without a Cause — borrows substantially from the 1989 song "I Wanna Be a Cowboy" by Brian Chatton, Nico Ramsden, Nick Richards, and Jeff Scopardi.
“The infringing composition contains substantial portions of the original composition and is a derivative work of the original composition. Defendant KID ROCK heard the original composition and played it in connection with his work as a disc jockey at various venues," explains the suit.
Named as co-defendants in the lawsuit are Lava Records, Atlantic Records, Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp., Squamosal Music, Cradle the Balls, Gaje Music, Inc., and Thirty-Two Mile Music. Microhits is seeking a jury trial, with damages to be determined at a later time.
